Game NotesKiltimagh will reflect on this as a bad day at the office as they face into a championship quarter final clash with Louisburgh. Kiltimagh’s good form in Division 1 went by the wayside as the team never got going in this game. Beaten in most areas around the field, they never really came to terms with Belmullet’s massed defence and quick breaks. However, despite the poor performance they still drew level with Belmullet on the 60 minute mark only to concede some soft frees in injury time. It all looked so different at the beginning as Sean Walsh stormed up the field straight from the throw in and had Kiltimagh in front after 20 seconds. Belmullet equalised but a Cillian Finn point put Kiltimagh ahead again. Scores were few and far between at this point and a Belmullet free had the teams level towards the end of the first quarter. Kiltimagh went ahead again in the 20th minute courtesy of a free from Eoghan Lavin but, again, Belmullet quickly drew level. Kiltimagh then managed to put some daylight between the sides when Liam Lydon goaled after a great attack by Liam Kelly. Another Belmulet free narrowed the gap but a point from Lavin cancelled that one out. Kitimagh then had a great chance of a second goal as Sean Walsh blazed through the Belmullet defence only to see his shot go narrowly over the bar. Belmullet then finished out the half the stronger as they kicked 3 points without reply to trail by 1 at the break. Belmullet turned to play with the strong breeze at their backs but it was Kiltimagh who had the first opportunity to impact on the scoreboard. A sublime ball from Ronan Malee found Tomas Keegan on his own in front of goal. As the full back tested the strength of Keegan’s jersey, his shot was blocked, with the referee missing the clear jersey pull. From that, Belmullet went up the field to get the first score of the half and level matters. Belmullet then took complete control of the game over the next 15 minutes and another 1-3 saw them go 6 points ahead. Kiltimagh then found some bit of their mojo as 2 Lavin frees narrowed the gap. With 5 minutes to go, Keegan struck for a goal and Kiltimagh were back in it. A Keegan free then levelled matters and Kiltimagh had all the momentum. However, a turnover at midfield led to a Belmullet free and that was converted to restore their lead. They never relented after that and Kiltimagh could not manage to work the ball up beyond the half way line. Two further concessions of very scorable frees put the game beyond Kiltimagh’s reach and, in reality, a win here for Kiltimagh would have been nothing short of daylight robbery. Belmullet now go on to play Swinford while Kiltimagh go on to play Louisburgh in a repeat of last year’s semi final. They will hope that this was a once off and will look to a return to form for that crucial clash.
