Game NotesFollowing Kiltimagh’s second win in Group 4, the draw played out between Ballyhaunis and Belmullet ensured that Kiltimagh progress to knock-out stages of this year’s championship. Kiltimagh’s victory was never in doubt in this game but the ease by which Mayo Gaels cut through the centre of Kiltimagh’s defence on quite a number of occasions, luckily resulting in only 3 goals, will be a cause for concern going into the business end of the championship. A sublime display of point-taking from Tomas Keegan was the highlight of this encounter and Kiltimagh wasted no time getting off the mark. Eoghan Lavin had the ball in the Mayo Gaels net after 2 minutes and Keegan followed that with a great point. After Mayo Gaels replied from a John Gallagher free, Sean Forkan’s speculative shot looped over the keeper and into the net to put Kiltimagh 2-1 to 0-1 ahead. Another Gallagher free narrowed the lead but Steve McDonnell cancelled that out. Mayo Gaels then went in for their first goal, palmed to net by Paul Mannion, but 2 further points from McDonnell and points from Lavin and Paul Kelly had Kiltimagh comfortably ahead 2-6 to 1-2. Gallagher pointed another free but Lavin then struck for his second goal as he unleashed an unstoppable shot to the bottom corner of the net. Another Keegan point stretched the lead to 10 points but Gallagher struck over another free for Mayo Gaels. Further points from Lavin, Sean Walsh and Keegan (2) to 2 points from Mayo Gaels saw Kiltimagh lead by 11 points at the break, 3-11 to 1-6. Kiltimagh were well in control in the opening stages of the second half as a Ronan Malee point and a Lavin free extended the lead to 13 points. The teams then exchanged frees and Mayo Gaels cut the lead to 12 before Keegan hit another magnificent point. At this point, 10 minutes into the second half and leading by 13 points, Kiltimagh took the foot of the gas. Tommy Keane moved into the middle of the field and he began to play havoc as no one seemed to take the responsibility to pick him up. A searing run right through the middle resulted in Mayo Gaels’ second goal and they followed that quickly with a point from the kick out. Brian Gallagher pointed for Kiltimagh but Keane again instigated the next attack which resulted in another Mayo Gaels goal. Kiltimagh looked to be in disarray as Mayo Gaels tore up the centre again only for McNicholas to pull off a brilliant save. Kiltimagh did get possession from that attack and Lavin ended the move upfield with a splendid point. As the game entered the final 10 minutes, Kiltimagh settled and outscored Mayo Gaels by 4 points to 2 in the closing phase, Kiltimagh’s points coming from Cillian Finn, Malee (2) and Lavin. They now face into their third group game against Belmullet in the comfort that their place in the last 8 has already been secured.
