Game NotesIn blistering heat at Ray Prendergast Park, Clogher, Kiltimagh and Ballintubber played out a fast paced, entertaining, high scoring game. Kiltimagh, missing quite a few regulars, played with great determination throughout and the scoreline does not reflect the challenge that this young Kiltimagh side put up to Ballintubber. At least 4 goals chances went a begging, as well as a number of points and the scoreline should have been a lot closer at the finish. That Kiltimagh were creating these chances showed that they were not overawed in the presence of a team of such senior championship pedigree. Kiltimagh started brightly and Ronan Malee kicked over a free to open the scoring. Another point from Malee put Kiltimagh in front again but 2 points from Ballintubber saw them edge ahead. A great point from Eoghan Lavin levelled matters but, after Kiltimagh had 2 gilt edged goal chances, Ballintubber goaled to stretch out their lead. Liam Kelly kicked over for Kiltimagh but another Ballintubber goal came before the break and Ballintubber led 2-6 to 0-4 at half time. Despite the draining heat, Kiltimagh revived themselves for the second half and despite an initial wobble when they conceded 2 points, they settled into their best period of play in the third quarter. Points from Lavin and Malee were followed by a goal from Conor Gallagher. When Lavin again pointed after a great Conor Mallee point, the lead was down to 4 points. However, that appeared to rouse Ballintubber and they kicked on with another goal and some fine points to put the game beyond the reach of Kiltimagh. Kiltimagh did kick 2 more points from the boot of Lavin and then an Owen Carroll free. Donovan Cosgrove did get a goal for Kiltimagh in the closing stages, whipping the ball across the face of goal, an inch away from the outstretched boot of the diving Brendan Mooney, and into the corner of the net. Kiltimagh’s age average shot up on the introduction of the evergreen Mooney and Paul Regan but when their club needed them, these 2 stalwarts answered that call. However, this was a day for youth and Conor Mallee, Conor Gallagher and Keenan O’Brien all showed that they may yet challenge for places in this team in the weeks ahead.
