Game NotesKiltimagh were not overly troubled in their first round clash with Shrule/Glencorrib,
despite going into this fixture having lost their 2 opening rounds of the league. There
was a massive breeze blowing from North to South and Shrule/Glencorrib elected to
play with it in the first half. The scoreline at half time of 0-1 to 0-1 meant that S/G had
left themselves with a mountain to climb in the second half. In fairness to both teams,
trying to play anything that resembled good football in the conditions was next to
impossible. The wind simply dominated proceedings and it was very difficult to kick
any score into the teeth of this wind. However, Kiltimagh will be delighted with their
defensive performance in this half and they snuffed out chance after chance. In fact
on the one occasion that S/G did break through, Jamie McNicholas was on hand to
make an excellent save. McNicholas’ kicks into the wind were spot on as S/G
struggled to get possession around the middle. Kiltimagh had most of the scoring
chances but it was extremely difficult to direct the ball between the posts. Ronan
Malee did manage it for the opening score after 10 minutes. S/G replied 3 minutes
later but that was to be the end of the scoring for the half. As anticipated, Kiltimagh
took the game by the scruff of the neck after the break and Tomas Keegan kicked 2
glorious points. Donovan Cosgrove hit another and Malee pointed a free. Eoghan
Lavin was then introduced and he was immediately in the action when he kicked a
monstrous point from about the half way line. Shrule/Glencorrib were then to get
their only score of the half and at 0-6 to 0-2 they were still very much in the game.
Malee and Brian Gallagher kicked 2 points to stretch Kiltimagh’s lead to 6 points.
Then a fortuitous goal came about from a Malee free and that effectively killed off the
Shrule/Glencorrib challenge. Malee did kick over the final score in what was a
confidence boosting win for Kiltimagh.
