Game NotesHaving had a great league campaign in 2019, Kiltimagh narrowly failed at the final
hurdle when they came up against Breaffy in atrocious weather conditions. That any
of these groups of players could serve up any kind of football in the conditions was a
credit to them as the rain was simply relentless. Kiltimagh started very brightly and
were in for 2 goal chances but the ball squirted away at the last minute. Ryan Mallee
kicked a great point from distance to open the scoring. Jack Morley then added
another free. Breaffy scored their first point and then had the ball in the net shortly
afterwards. Kiltimagh were then hit a severe blow when a shoulder to shoulder tackle
resulted in a serious injury to Ryan Mallee and he had to leave the field. Callum
McNicholas replaced Ryan and his cousin Oisin McNicholas moved to the middle of
the park. Kiltimagh soldiered on without Ryan and then Conor Prendergast hit a
great ball into the top corner of the Breaffy net to restore Kiltimagh’s lead. Breaffy
then struck for a point and again followed that with a goal. Breaffy now led by a goal
2-2 to 1-2. Jack Morley floated a long ball into the square but the full back dropped it
in the wet conditions and it squirmed over the line. The teams were now level. While
both sides had as much of the ball over the closing 5 minutes, Breaffy had the ball in
the Kiltimagh net on 2 occasions and Kiltimagh only had a point from Fionnán Burke
to show for their efforts. It was still all to play for in the second half as Kiltimagh were
behind by 5 points, 2-3 to 4-2 at the break. Kiltimagh’s strongest period came in the
third quarter when they dominated possession but, unfortunately, were not able to
convert this on the scoreboard. They were also extremely solid in defence where
Jonathan Houlihan was magnificent and he was ably assisted by Tadhg Caulfield
and Darragh McGovern in the full back line. A Jack Morley free opened the scoring
and Breaffy soon cancelled that out. Kiltimagh squandered a number of scoring
chances and then after a great passing movement Oisin McNicholas hit a rasper off
the crossbar. It looked like it was not going to be Kiltimagh’s night and that was
compounded 2 minutes letter when Kiltimagh suffered their second serious injury of
the night when Darragh McGovern had to leave the field. Despite these setbacks,
Kiltimagh were thrown a lifeline when Fionnán Burke scored a great goal to leave
just 2 between the sides. Jack Morley then pointed and the gap was down to the
minimum. Just when it looked like Kiltimagh might overtake them, Breaffy rallied and
scored a very fortuitous goal. This was a cruel score and it seemed to break
Kiltimagh’s resolve and a simple free then extended Breaffy’s lead to 5 points. A
Jack Morley free brought it back to 4 and Kiltimagh continued to press the Breaffy
defence but could not get the goal they needed. In injury time, with Kiltimagh
pressing forward, Breaffy snuck in for a goal to kill off the game. Despite the defeat,
this was a great year for these young lads. There is still championship and Feile
ahead and Darragh and Ryan will be sorely missed in the games ahead and
everyone wishes Ryan and Darragh a speedy recovery and we hope to see them out
on the field again soon. Particular commiserations to Darragh who also misses the
Cumann na mBunscoil Final on the 11 th June next.
