Last Ever Byrne/Morley Tournament
Aug 5, 2010, 10:04 pm

A huge crowd were in attendance at Gilmartin Park, Kiltimagh on Friday evening 30th July 2010 to be present at the last ever hosting of the Club’s tournament held in memory of the Henry Byrne and John Morley. 2010 is the 30th anniversary of the deaths of Henry and John, both of whom played football for Kiltimagh, and the club thought it fitting to do something special to honour their memory. The club were delighted to welcome Anne Byrne and Frances Morley and members of the Byrne and the Morley families; Bob and Nancy McCallion and the members of the McCallion family; Superintendent Ronan Galligan on behalf of Chief Superintendent Tom Curley; former Chief Superintendent Johnny Carey; former Garda Derek Kelly and many more. Michael McDonnell, formerly manager of Bank of Ireland, Kiltimagh attended on behalf of the Bank who sponsored the event. Special guest on the night was Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy and the Club presented the Byrne/Morley cup to him, on behalf of the Gardai, and it will be displayed from here on in Swinford Garda Station. Commissioner Murphy spoke movingly of the wonderful contribution John and Henry made to the Gardai, the GAA, their families and their community before their untimely deaths and he re-iterated that they and their families would never be forgotten by An Gardai Siochana.

Tomas Morley, Kiltimagh Club captain and nephew of John Morley, spoke of the legacy of John and Henry and how the tournament has been special for the families over the years and while it was sad to see it come to an end, he knew that John and Henry would always hold a special place in the annals of the club. Michael McDonnell reminded those present of the horrible events that led to the deaths on John and Henry and Sgt Donal Duignan, manager of the Garda football team, spoke of how honoured the Gardai were to have participated in the tournament over the years.

The final duty of the Garda Commissioner, on the night, was to unveil a mounted photograph of John and Henry. This will be a permanent reminder in the Clubhouse of our two deceased clubmates and their special position within the Club.

The evening was rounded off with a very enjoyable function in the Cill Aodain Court Hotel.

There was a match too and what an exciting match it was. Kiltimagh, holders of the trophy for the last 3 years were intent on retaining the trophy and fielded their strongest team. It was nip and tuck and, despite playing with a strong breeze, the Gardai only led by a point at the break, 0-4 to 0-3. Kiltimagh started the better in the second half and a goal from Noel Lydon saw them go a goal ahead and both teams then exchanged points a number of times until, with 2 minutes remaining, there was still 2 points between the sides. A goal at that point put the Gardai a point up and, try as they might, Kiltimagh could not overturn that margin. The Gardai were deserving winners on the night and it was fitting that the cup, on its last outing, should be presented to the captain of the victorious Gardai team, former Mayo County player, Declan Sweeney.
